Shepherds Hut

Shepherds Hut Build

Not so much a restoration but more a reconstruction of a traditional shepherds hut which began with the purchase of some genuine, vintage cast iron wheels and associated running gear.

I was keen to combine the aesthetics of an original hut with the latest technology to provide warm, well insulated and comfortable accommodation, it’s the little details such as the correct curve on the roof and the delicate glazing bars on the windows that, I feel, make all the difference.

At approximately 14′ long it’s slightly larger than a traditional style hut but it has allowed the inclusion of a full sized double bed, a small dresser (built specifically), a table / chairs and, perhaps more importantly, a delightful little “Wendy” wood stove from the fabulous Windy Smithy forge in Devon.

The flooring is, together with other details, in solid oak and I’ve used hand-made terracotta pamments for the hearth. As someone who has a passion for the age when products were built-to-last, I’ve recycled beautiful old bakelite switchgear where I can to enhance the vintage feel…

Although traditionally an extremely basic form of shelter, and used in fields by shepherds at lambing time, the modern day shepherds hut offers extremely comfortable glamping accommodation and, with the little wood stove roaring away on a cold winters night, an escape into times gone by…

Stop Press: This shepherd’s hut is now available as a holiday let, it boasts stunning views and is situated in beautiful rural South Herefordshire. Please contact me for booking details.

Having completed this build I’m currently working on a similar project, for a private client, recreating a traditional Living Van that’ll be transported to Normandy where it’ll be used as additional guest accommodation.
